The Engler Agribusiness Entrepreneurship Program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) highlights the launch of Enterprise Studio, an innovative university business incubator designed to provide Engler students with the resources, coaching, and academic credit they need to build successful businesses while completing their collegiate education.
Unlike traditional entrepreneurship courses, Enterprise Studio replaces classroom lectures with real-world business development. Students accepted into the program can earn up to three credits each semester while actively growing their ventures under the guidance of experienced business coaches.
“Enterprise Studio represents a fundamental shift in how we approach entrepreneurship education,” said Dave Lambe, Chief Learning Officer for the Engler Program. “Instead of simply teaching theory, we’re creating an environment where students can dedicate significant time to building their businesses while still progressing toward their degrees.”
The program is designed to serve as a true incubator for Nebraska’s next generation of business leaders. Students participate in regular coaching sessions, track their progress, access specialized business content, and engage in semester activities such as legal reviews, and mock-financing competitions.
“Through Enterprise Studios, I’ve been given the resources, guidance, and focus to move my business to the next level,” said, Adam Kotas, a senior Enterprise Studio student. “What sets Enterprise Studio apart is its focus on real-world applications. Everyday I’m applying what I’m learning directly to the business, which has helped me grow faster than I ever expected.”
To qualify for the Enterprise Studio, applicants must be full Engler members with a concrete business idea and target customer group. Most importantly, they must demonstrate a commitment to building immediately and have significant time available in their weekly schedules to dedicate to their ventures.
“What makes Enterprise Studio unique is its flexibility and customization,” explained Brennan Costello, Chief Business Development Officer. “Each student receives tailored coaching based on where they are in their entrepreneurial journey. Some are in the pre-launch phase testing ideas, while others are scaling existing businesses or preparing to access our financing program.”
The Enterprise Studio complements the recently launched Engler Financing Program, a partnership with Union Bank & Trust that provides low-interest business loans ranging from $5,000 to $25,000 to Engler student entrepreneurs.
“The Engler Program’s academic credit component has been a game-changer, allowing me to focus on growing my business without delaying my graduation,” said Seth Wright, a senior Enterprise Studio student and founder of Scrappy Woodworks. “The courses I’ve taken through Engler have been a highlight of my college career, providing both practical knowledge and real-world application. As a graduating senior, the Enterprise Studio has given me the resources, mentorship, and flexibility to build my business while staying on track with my degree—an opportunity that has been truly invaluable in my entrepreneurial journey.”
Applications for the Enterprise Studio are accepted on a rolling basis, allowing students to join at any point during the semester when they’re ready to build. The program will initially focus on UNL students, with plans to eventually expand to high school students and alumni.
“We believe entrepreneurship is a vehicle for pursuing one’s purpose,” Costello added. “Enterprise Studio gives our students the time, resources, and support to turn their ideas into businesses that can transform their career and eventually, their communities.”
